Masia VC Launches €20 Million Angel Fund to Boost Barcelona's Tech Scene
Masia, a new angel fund with a capital of €20 million, has been launched by the team behind Aldea Ventures, a well-known pan-European venture capital entity. This fund aims to establish Barcelona as a leading tech hub in Europe through a unique collective model involving experienced founders and operators.
Local Initiative with European Outlook
Masia operates as a collective of founders and financiers, all connected to Barcelona, fostering mutual support among them. The fund plans to finance 60 pre-seed and seed-stage startups, focusing on breakthrough technologies.
The initial portfolio includes nine startups: Fermat, Biorce, Zymvol Biomodeling, Capably, IMA Health, Oliva, CareerOS, Spock, and Galtea. These ventures have been co-financed with approximately 20 specialized European micro-funds.
Masia identifies three converging dynamics:
Increasing maturity of the local ecosystem: Local founders are completing exits and reinvesting. Significant influx of international entrepreneurs: In 2024, two-thirds of tech startups in Barcelona had at least one foreign founder. Need for reliable local partners by international VCs: European early-stage investors seek to establish a foothold in the Barcelona scene through well-connected local partners.
Masia, a new angel fund with a capital of €20 million, has been launched by the team behind Aldea Ventures, a well-known pan-European venture capital entity.
The fund aims to connect Barcelona-based founders with international investors and integrate international founders into the local ecosystem.
Masia engages in active co-investment with the new generation of European micro-funds, including Moonfire, Outsized Ventures, Übermorgen Ventures, Lunar Ventures, Nina Capital, Concept Ventures, and impact fund Mustard Seed Maze. This approach is designed to enhance synergies between ecosystems and provide local startups with expedited access to specialized capital networks.
The fund's LPs are seasoned founders and operators with experience in founding, developing, or selling tech companies. These LPs contribute more than just capital; they help identify promising founders and support the new generation with time, advice, and trusted networks.
Advisors to the fund include Elisenda Bou-Balust, Philippe Gelis, Albert Nieto Riera, and Albert Castells, all of whom are prominent figures in Barcelona's tech ecosystem.
Masia intends to deploy its entire fund over the next two years. They are open to engaging with bold projects based in Barcelona or Barcelona-born founders abroad.
