The Motion Pictures Association (MPA), representing major American entertainment companies such as Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal, Warner Bros, and Netflix , has officially commented on a European Union plan aimed at combating audiovisual piracy, including IPTV and illegal streaming.

According to a report by a specialized site, the European Commission has issued a targeted recommendation on combating online piracy of sports and other live events. This recommendation encourages member states to implement automated site-blocking measures promptly.

Support for Automated Blocking Mechanisms

The MPA has expressed strong support for these measures. In response to the EU's request for feedback from rights holders, the organization has evaluated the systems implemented across Europe. It noted that while some countries have not effectively implemented the recommended provisions, others have established efficient automated blocking mechanisms that can be updated in real time.

For example, countries such as Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Brazil have implemented dynamic systems that allow rights holders to block illicit streams in real time. Despite occasional errors that may restrict access to legitimate services, these tools are considered effective against piracy, though not foolproof. When a pirate service is blocked, operators often register a new domain to circumvent the initial blocking order.

To enhance these efforts, the MPA advocates for the involvement of additional actors in implementing these blocks. This includes Internet service providers, reverse proxy providers, content delivery networks (CDNs), hosting services, VPNs, and search engines. Such measures could significantly impede the circumvention efforts by illegal platforms.
